Vincent

Most Poles have never met one: only around 2,000 carry it, all of them men. But it's climbing back, given to more boys now than in years past, and it comes from the Latin for "conquering".

What Vincent means

Where Vincent comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Vincent grows from the Latin Vincentius, built on the verb vincere, to conquer. The short meaning stays close to that root: conquering, prevailing. Early Christians favored the name for the promise inside it, and it moved west into French and English speech, where Vincent settled comfortably.

French history gave the name Saint Vincent de Paul, the seventeenth-century priest who built a network of charity for the poor. Painters and clerks carried it too. Vincent van Gogh signed his canvases with the first name alone, and the English kept the same short form without altering a letter.

In Poland the name became Wincenty, and it grew a feminine form, Wincentyna. Wincenty Kadłubek, the medieval bishop and chronicler, wrote much of what we know about the early Polish kings. On a school class register the name reads short and plain. Its meaning holds steady: zwyciężający, the one who prevails.
