Oliwer

Oliwer began with a Germanic root, something close to Alfihar, an old name linked to elves. The sense of olive tree, drzewo oliwne in Polish, was fastened to it later, once the Latin oliva made itself heard inside the sound. So the fruit is a borrowed meaning laid over a much older word.

The Polish w is the clue. English and Latin keep the v of Oliver and oliva, while Poland writes the letter its ear supplies. Medieval scribes already tried Oliwir, Olwir, and Olwer before the modern spelling settled.

On a school register today, Oliwer is the rarer face of the name. In 2026 roughly 3,300 men and boys in Poland carry it, which puts it near 266th among boys' names. The busier path runs through a spelling with an added i. Under both sits the same olive tree.
