Zoriana

Zoriana rises from the Slavic word zorya, the name for dawn and for the morning star that appears just before it. The form is Ukrainian, and it has stayed close to that root. A Polish ear catches zorza and jutrznia inside it, the first pale light of the day.

In older Slavic belief the Zorya were sky sisters who unlocked the morning and shut the night behind it. Zoriana grew from the same word. The name carries no common Polish diminutive, so it arrives whole, with nothing worn down.

Picture a school register on the first day of term. A teacher meets Zoriana among the Zofias and Zuzannas, pauses once, then reads it clearly. What the name gives back is plain enough: dawn, and the morning star that opens it.
