Eliasz
A Hebrew name carrying a whole declaration: "my god is Yahweh". It sits just inside Poland's top thousand, given only to boys and rarely enough that most Poles have never met one.
Eliasz Pronunciation
Eliasz is pronounced EL-yahsh (/ˈɛljaʂ/).
What Eliasz means
Where Eliasz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Eliasz comes from the Hebrew name Eliyahu, and it makes a small confession of faith. Its meaning, "my god is yahweh," was less a label than a statement about whose side a family stood on. The prophet who carried it, called Eliasz in Polish, spent his life arguing that point against the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel.
That biblical weight is why the name never quite settled into the ordinary. In Poland the main imieniny falls on 20 July, the feast of the prophet, so a boy named Eliasz shares his day with a figure who was said to leave the earth in a chariot of fire.
The Greek-shaped variant Ilias travels the same root, worn smoother by another language. Both point back to the same declaration.
Read a school register today and Eliasz sits among the newer arrivals, a short name with an old spine. It has kept its meaning intact for a long time. Say it and you are saying, in Hebrew still, that my god is yahweh.
