Wincenty

The name Wincenty comes from the Latin Vincentius, built on the verb vincere, "to conquer." Its short meaning stays close to that root: conquering, or victorious. The same verb gives us the English words "invincible" and "convince," so the sense of prevailing sits in the name from the start.

Polish history handed the name to real bearers. Wincenty Kadłubek, the medieval bishop and chronicler, wrote one of the earliest histories of Poland and was later beatified. Centuries on, Wincenty Witos led the peasant movement and served three times as prime minister. Different men, one name.

The shorter form Wincent turns up too, trimmer on the tongue and on an official form at the urząd.

Victory here is no boast. In Latin the word could mean winning an argument or holding firm under strain, which is why "convince" grew from the same source. A boy called Wincenty answers to a word that once meant simply this: the one who prevails.
