What Angelina means

Where Angelina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Angelina grows from the Greek word angelos, which meant a messenger, someone sent to carry news. The same root gave Europe the word angel, and it stands behind Aniela and Angela. The short sense that clings to the name, anielska posłanniczka or angelic messenger, comes from that older work of delivering word.

The angel meaning came later. Angelos first named the runner with a message, and only Christian use bound the word to winged heralds. So the name reaches us doubled, a Greek courier underneath and something loftier on top.

In Slavic records Angelina also appears as Anhelina, a variant that keeps the breath of an Eastern spelling. A girl might one day meet both versions on a form at the urząd, one closer to Latin, one closer to the Cyrillic east, and choose which one signs her class register.
