Miriam

The name Miriam comes from Hebrew, and its oldest famous bearer is the sister of Moses and Aaron, a prophetess who appears in the Book of Exodus. Scholars have never fully agreed on what the root means. The traditional readings gather around three senses: bitterness, the beloved one, and the wished-for child. That range is unusual for so short a name.

Its cultural home is Jewish tradition, where Miriam kept its shape for a long time before it spread across Europe. In Polish records the spelling mirjam turns up as a variant. The idea of rebellion, bunt in Polish, attached itself to the name later. It was drawn from readings of the biblical Miriam, who challenged her brother and was punished for speaking out.
