Veronica
The foreign cousin of Weronika, Greek at root and carrying the sense of a "true image". It stays rare in Poland: most people here have never met one.

What Veronica means
Where Veronica comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Veronica reaches back to the Greek name Pherenike, later Berenike, made from a word for victory and a verb for carrying it forward. Its oldest meaning is plain: bringing victory.
A second meaning arrived much later. Readers in the Latin West heard vera icon in the name, the true image, and linked it to Saint Veronica, who by tradition wiped the face of Christ on the road to Calvary. The sense of true image was attached to the name that way, long after the Greek victory-bearer had faded from common memory.
Both meanings traveled. Italian kept Veronica current, and English speakers took to it as well. In Poland the name settled into the variant Weronika, the spelling a teacher still reads off a class register each September. Whichever form a child receives, two stories sit inside it: a Greek promise of victory and the Latin true image, prawdziwy wizerunek.
