Vitalina

Vitalina comes from the Latin vitalis, meaning "of life," which was built on vita, the ordinary Latin word for life. The same root sits inside English vital and vitality, and inside the old saint's name Vitalis, a martyr venerated at Milan. So the sense people give Vitalina now, full of life, sits close to where the word actually began.

The name settled most firmly in Ukrainian and Russian usage, where it reads as warm and unmistakably feminine. Poland knows a variant spelling, Witalina, with the w that Polish prefers. Both point back to the same Latin stem.

Picture a teacher reading the class register on the first day of school. A Witalina answers. The name tells anyone listening that its owner was named for liveliness, żywa, żywotna in Polish. That meaning is old. It has stayed put since Roman tongues first said vitalis.
