What Sarah means

Where Sarah comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Sarah comes from Hebrew, and it means princess. In the book of Genesis, Abraham's wife is called Sarai before she is renamed Sarah, and Scripture ties the new name to a promise that kings will descend from her. So the sense of rank was there from the start.

English speakers took the name up after the Reformation, when Puritan families favoured Hebrew names drawn from the Old Testament. From England it travelled with settlers and later ranked among the most common names given to girls in the English-speaking world. Its spelling held firm.

In a Polish class register today, a Sara sits among the Zuzannas and Julias, her name written without the final h. The form is foreign and fully at home. Whatever else it gathers, the word underneath still means princess.
