Rayan

The name Rayan traces back to a Hebrew root, though most people who meet it today hear something Arabic. Its short meaning points to water: well-watered and lush, the kind of ground that stays green in a dry season.

In Islamic tradition that watery sense grew into a specific promise. Ar-Rayyan is the name of a gate of Paradise, described in a hadith recorded by al-Bukhari, reserved for those who kept the fast. So a Polish reading glosses Rayan as brama raju, the gate of the garden, obfity i nawodniony. The thirsty are let through first.

Rayan keeps its own shape. No Polish diminutive has fastened onto it, no softened variant, so a boy called Rayan on a class register stays Rayan through the school year.

That is a name built on abundance rather than scarcity. The meaning holds close to its Semitic ground: well-watered, lush.
