Massimo

Massimo comes straight from the Latin maximus, the superlative that means greatest. Where magnus means large, maximus pushes to the top of the scale, and the Italian name kept that ranking intact. In Polish the sense lands as największy.

The Romans handed the word to the church. Maximus of Turin, a bishop who preached at the turn of the fifth century, carried it as a saint's name, and Italy has kept San Massimo on its calendars since. A boy called Massimo answers to a claim of rank and size every time a teacher reads the class register aloud. That is a lot to hold in three syllables. Yet the name wears it lightly, common enough across Italy to sound like an ordinary given name rather than a boast.
