Mariia

Mariia is the Ukrainian spelling of Maria. Those two letters at the end, the doubled i, mark the name as Slavic and specifically Ukrainian, the way a class register would render it once transliterated from Cyrillic. In Poland the same root softens into Marysia, a diminutive a child answers to for years, or shortens further into the Mania an aunt might use.

The old glosses on Maria pull in two directions, beloved and bitter. Neither sense was the origin. Both were fastened to the name later, as readers and clergy looked back and tried to explain a word already ancient. Polish tradition leans toward the warmer reading, umiłowana przez Boga, beloved by God.

A girl named Mariia today might turn up on an official form at the urząd beside a cousin written down as Maria, one root split by a border and a single letter.
