Charlotte
Given to more girls last year than ever before, it's on a clear climb, though still rare enough that most Poles have never met a Charlotte. Germanic at root, it carries the old sense of "free woman".
Charlotte Pronunciation
Charlotte is pronounced khahr-LOT-te (/xarˈlɔttɛ/).
What Charlotte means
Where Charlotte comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Charlotte comes from the Germanic root karl, "free man," and took its modern shape as a feminine form of Charles. French speakers softened the sound and passed it to England, where the court took to it. The short meaning that carried into Polish reads wolna kobieta, a free woman.
Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, gave the name royal standing in the eighteenth century, and a North Carolina city still bears her name today. Charlotte Brontë published Jane Eyre under a borrowed man's pen name before her own was known. In 1952 a spider named Charlotte spun words to save a pig, and the book sold in the millions.
The name never fully left. Princess Charlotte, born in 2015, put it back onto birth registers across Europe. On a Polish class register it now sits easily between Zofia and Maja.
Its meaning stays plain. Free woman, from the Germanic karl.
