Luka Pronunciation
Luka is pronounced LOO-kah (/ˈluka/).
What Luka means
Where Luka comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Luka arrives in Polish as a Greek name. It goes back to Loukas, the name of the evangelist, and behind Loukas stands Lucania, a region in southern Italy. The people once called Loukanoi were simply those who came from that place.
The English gloss reads light, and the Polish gives światło. That sense leans on Latin lux, which sits close in sound to the older Loukas, so the reading of light was attached to the name later rather than present from the start. The place-name came first.
In Poland the fuller form most people reach for is Łukasz, and Luka stands beside it as the shorter one. On a school class register the two could appear a line apart, one boy answering to each. What both hold onto is that old root running back through Loukas to Lucania.
