What Marcos means

Where Marcos comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Marcos begins in Latin, the Spanish form of Marcus, a Roman name bound to Mars, the god of war. The short meaning stays close to that root: belonging to Mars. Roman soldiers carried Marcus across the empire, and Spanish speakers later smoothed the ending until Marcus became Marcos, the form now printed on identity cards from Madrid to Buenos Aires.

In Spanish the evangelist Mark is Marcos, and the second Gospel goes by the title Evangelio de Marcos. His emblem is a lion, which is why a winged lion guards the square in Venice that bears his name. So a name rooted in a war god came to sit beside a saint.

The military sense never fully left. In Poland the name stays foreign, a guest beside the native Marek, its cognate from the same Latin root. On a school register it would sit apart from the Mareks, still meaning belonging to Mars.
