Łukasz

The name Łukasz comes from Greek Loukas, a short form that scholars trace back to Latin Lucanus, "man from Lucania," a region in the south of old Italy. The plain sense recorded for it is simply "from Lucania." So the name began as a marker of place, a way of saying where a person belonged before it said anything about who they were.

Its closest relative is the variant Lukas, worn across much of Europe with only a shift of spelling. One early bearer sealed the name's fortune: Luke the Evangelist, author of a Gospel and patron of physicians and painters. His feast on 18 October became the Polish imieniny for every Łukasz, and it holds that place still.

For centuries the name stayed common and unfussy. Read a school register in any Polish town. You will find a Łukasz near the top, sometimes two. The place-name meaning slipped from daily view long ago, yet it sits there in the record, "pochodzący z Lukanii," the man from Lucania.
