What Joshua means

Where Joshua comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Joshua begins in Hebrew, in the name Yehoshua, and its meaning stays close to the surface: Yahweh is salvation. In the Hebrew Bible it belongs to the man who followed Moses and led the people across the Jordan into Canaan. So from the start the name is bound to a story of rescue and arrival.

The Hebrew form has a shorter cousin, Yeshua, which passed through Greek as Iesous and stands behind the name Jesus. Joshua kept the longer shape and a separate life.

English is where it settled. After the Reformation, English-speaking families turned toward Old Testament names, and Joshua took hold among them, worn by farmers and preachers and later by presidents' sons. It travels light. A Polish teacher reading a class register today might pause a beat before the sh, since Polish would sooner write that sound as sz, and the boy answers to it all the same. Whatever else it collects, the name still reports the old sentence underneath: Yahweh is salvation.
