Elias

Elias reaches back to the Hebrew Eliyahu, borne by the prophet Elijah of the Bible. The name reads as a small declaration: my god is Yahweh. Greek and Latin smoothed Eliyahu into Elias, and that Latin form is the one German and Scandinavian families adopted and kept.

In Poland the name arrived in its own dress. Here it is written Eliasz, with the sz that Polish gives to sounds other alphabets spell differently. A boy called Eliasz and a boy called Elias share one root and one meaning, moim bogiem jest jahwe.

Elias has stayed common in Germany, Sweden, and Norway, where registrars still enter it near the top of birth lists. The prophet gives the name its ballast. Elijah confronted kings and called down fire, so the sound has never been merely soft. Say it on a class register and it lands plainly. The meaning is a full sentence: my god is Yahweh.
