Santiago

Santiago began as a phrase and hardened into a name. Spanish speakers ran together "Sant" and "Yago," their word for saint and their old form of James, until the two locked into one. Behind it sits the Latin "Sanctus Iacobus." The short meaning holds that origin plainly: Saint James, święty Jakub.

The James here is the apostle James the Greater. His shrine at Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, pulled pilgrims from across medieval Europe, and the road to it is still walked. The same name later served as a Spanish rallying cry and marked cities from Chile to Cuba.

Santiago travels alone. It took on no everyday diminutive and no feminine form, which is unusual for a name this old.
