Meaning & Origin

What Dominik means

Where Dominik comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Dominik comes from the Latin Dominicus, formed from dominus, "lord," and it means "of the lord." The same root gave the Romance languages their word for Sunday: domenica in Italian, domingo in Spanish, both from dies Dominica, the Lord's day. So the name shares its bones with a day of the week.

Much of its spread across Europe follows one man, Saint Dominic (Dominicus, 1170 to 1221), the Castilian priest who founded the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. Polish records carry the name for centuries after him, and it settled into the calendar. His feast is kept on 8 August, one of several dates that hold the imieniny for Dominik in Poland.

The name bends easily. Dominika serves the girls, Dominique crosses languages and gender, and Domi does the friendly work at home. Read a class register and you can find a Dominik and a Dominika in the same column.

The Polish sense, należący do Boga, "belonging to God," reads the "lord" of the origin as the Lord. That reading has held. Behind all of it sits the plain Latin: dominus, the master of the house.
