Diego

The name Diego comes to us from Latin, and its Spanish home has held it for centuries. Behind it stands the Latin Didacus, the name of a fifteenth-century Franciscan friar from Andalusia, Diego de Alcalá. When Spanish missionaries later founded a settlement in California, they named the place San Diego after him.

Two meanings sit inside the name. One reads Diego as "supplanter," the sense attached to Jacob and passed down through the Spanish Santiago. The other pulls toward a Greek root about teaching, and this is the sense Polish keeps when it glosses Diego as nauczyciel, teacher, and uczeń, pupil. So the name holds a classroom in it.
