What Marc means

Where Marc comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Marc traces back to the Latin Marcus, one of the oldest Roman first names. Marcus grew from Mars, the god of war, which gives the name its sense of "dedicated to Mars." A Roman who bore it stood under the sign of a god who ruled both the fields and the battlefield.

The name moved west and settled in France, where Marc became the standard French form. French speakers kept the ending short and the sound hard. Marc Chagall, the painter, signed his canvases with exactly this spelling.

In Poland the French form turns up on official documents and in a school class register, where a boy might hear it read out from the list. Its name-day falls on the 25th of April, the feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist.

The meaning has never softened. Należący do Marsa, belonging to Mars, still sits beneath the modern spelling.
