Ola

Ola begins as the short form of Aleksandra, and the fuller name hands it a meaning: defender of the people. In Polish that is obrończyni ludzi, a woman who stands for her own. Ola keeps all of this behind one soft pair of sounds, plain enough for a school register, warm enough for an imieniny card.

The roots here are Slavic, and the word travels far past Poland. In Norway, Ola is an everyday man's name, a form of Olav, and Ola Nordmann is that country's stock everyman, the local John Doe. So the same three letters answer to a Polish girl and to a Norwegian farmer, depending on where you say them.

Around Ola sits a whole family of longer relatives: Aleksandra, the Belarusian Aliaksandra, the tender Oleńka, the brisk Ala, and the masculine Aleksander, who shares the same defending sense. Ola is the least formal of them. It suits a small child, then follows her onto official forms at the urząd without ever having to grow up.
