Marina

Marina comes from Latin, from marinus, the adjective for anything belonging to the sea. Mare meant sea, and marina meant simply "of the sea." The same root sits inside English words like marine and maritime, so the sense travels well past Poland.

In Polish records the name keeps close company with its variant Maryna, a form that reads a little older and more rural. A girl named Marina and a woman named Maryna may share one origin while sounding centuries apart. On a school register the two forms can sit a few lines from each other.

The sea in the name is literal, not decorative. Marina does not mean calm or beauty; it means belonging to the water, morska in Polish. Later readers have tied it to saints and to seaside towns, yet the Latin adjective stays plain underneath.
