Meaning & Origin

What Renata means

Where Renata comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Renata comes from Latin. Behind it sits renatus, built from re-, "again," and natus, "born," which gives the plain sense: reborn. In early Christian use the word carried the idea of baptism, a second birth into faith, and the name traveled into Italian and French as Renata and Renée.

One real bearer anchors it. Renée of France, born in 1510, daughter of King Louis XII, became Duchess of Ferrara and sheltered Protestant thinkers at her court. Her Italian subjects called her Renata.

The short form in Polish is Rena, easy to call across a schoolyard. When a teacher reads the class register and reaches Renata, the three syllables settle quickly, and Rena does the rest of the work at recess. The Polish meaning, odrodzona, keeps the Latin promise intact: born again.
