Patrycja

Patrycja comes from the Latin patricius, the word Rome used for its patrician class. Those were the families who traced their line back to the early senators, the patres, the fathers of the city. So the short meaning is a plain inheritance from that world: noble, high-born, or in Polish szlachetnie urodzona.

The masculine form is Patryk, built on the same root. In English and Italian the name settles as Patricia, the variant a Polish Patrycja meets on any foreign form. One documented bearer was Patricia of Naples, a seventh-century woman later counted among the co-patrons of the city; her relics are still kept there, at San Gregorio Armeno, where her dried blood is said to liquefy every Tuesday.

The meaning is old and plain. Read a Polish class register and the name sits without fuss, a Patrycja between a Paulina and a Weronika. The Roman patres are long gone, but the sense holds: szlachetnie urodzona, noble by birth.
