Yevheniia

Yevheniia is the Ukrainian shape of a Greek word. Behind it stand two small pieces: eu, meaning well, and genos, meaning birth or kin. Together they form eugenes, well-born and noble. The name passed from Greek into Latin as Eugenia, and Ukrainian speakers softened the vowels until it became Yevheniia.

The variant Eugenia keeps the older spelling, while the masculine Eugeniusz walks beside it as a brother form. A girl named Yevheniia shares her root with every Eugene and Eugenia across Europe. The Greek sense pointed less toward rank than toward good stock and steady character, so the meaning well-born always sat close to the surface.

On an official form at the urząd, Yevheniia is written out in full, with no diminutive allowed. The formal name waits there. Among friends it slips into Zhenia, but on paper it stays whole: well-born, noble, a Eugenia in Ukrainian dress.
