Eugeniusz

Eugeniusz means well-born, szlachetnie urodzony in Polish. That sense sits inside the name's older forms and travels with it across Slavic languages, where the same root gives Yevheniya to Ukrainian speakers, and Eugenia as the feminine variant. In the house it shrinks to Gienia, the diminutive an aunt would reach for.

Saints kept it in circulation. So many bishops and confessors bore Eugeniusz that the Polish calendar holds a dozen name-days, with July 13 the one most people mark, after Eugeniusz of Carthage. On that morning a boy of that name might hand out sweets beside the class register.

The twentieth century gave the name two faces. Eugeniusz Bodo, the star of interwar cinema, made it glamorous before the war took him. Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski built the port at Gdynia and attached the name to work that lasted.

Today Eugeniusz reads as a grandfather's name more than a newborn's, plain and solid. Gienia stays close to it, and Eugenia holds the same well-born meaning across the gender line. Well-born is what it still says.
