Yevhenii

Yevhenii comes from Greek. Behind it stands Eugenios, built from eu, meaning good, and a second part tied to genos, birth or descent. Read straight, the name says well-born, noble, and that reading has held since antiquity.

In Ukraine it became an everyday name, with Yevhen serving as the familiar short form. The writer Yevhen Hrebinka, born in 1812, carried that shorter shape and left fables and songs in Ukrainian.
