Vanessa

Vanessa entered English through a poem. Jonathan Swift built it in the early 1700s for his friend Esther Vanhomrigh, splicing part of her surname to a pet form of her first name. The invention stuck. Within a century the coinage had crossed from private verse into ordinary use.

The link to a butterfly came later. In 1807 the Danish entomologist Johan Christian Fabricius gave the name Vanessa to a genus of brush-footed butterflies, the group that includes the red admiral and the painted lady. Scholars usually trace his choice back to Phanes, a figure from Greek mystery cult, and that is where the Greek thread in the name is placed. So the sense of motyl, of butterfly, was attached to the name after the fact, through natural history rather than through any ancient root.

On a Polish class register today Vanessa sits among older names without apology. It keeps its full form, no common Polish diminutive having settled onto it. The meaning most people reach for is the plainest one: butterfly, rusałka in the Polish reading.
