What Ziemowit means

Where Ziemowit comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Ziemowit comes from Slavic roots. The name it grew from makes a plain claim: władca rodu, lord of the family. The medieval chronicle of Gall Anonim, written around 1113, gives the Piast dynasty a legendary ancestor named Siemowit, the son of Piast the wheelwright. That ancestor is where the name begins.

The second part of the name, the element -wit, means lord or master, and it turns up in other old Polish names such as Jarowit and Świętowit. The first part points toward household and kin. Put together, the sense of a man set over his own people has stayed close to the name for centuries.

For a long stretch the name lived mostly in dynastic memory, attached to more than one Piast duke of Mazovia in the medieval period. It came back into ordinary use later. A child called Ziemowit today might meet his own name first on a class register, printed between more common ones. The meaning underneath stays the same: władca rodu.
