Wincent
A Latin name meaning "conquering", a shorter relative of Wincenty. Still rare enough that most Poles have never met one, but it's climbing fast: more boys got it last year than in the quiet years before.
Wincent Pronunciation
Wincent is pronounced VEEN-tsent (/ˈvint͡sɛnt/).
What Wincent means
Where Wincent comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Wincent comes from the Latin Vincentius, built on the verb vincere, to conquer. The meaning that traveled with it is plain: conquering, in Polish zwyciężający. The fuller form Wincenty has long stood beside it, and the two draw on one root.
Poland has known real bearers of that fuller form. Wincenty Kadłubek, a bishop and chronicler of the early thirteenth century, wrote one of the country's first histories of the realm. Wincenty Witos led the peasant movement and served three times as head of the Polish government. Their name kept its promise of victory.
Read a class register today. Wincent sits shorter than Wincenty, the same name trimmed to fit. The sense stays with it, that old Latin push to conquer, zwyciężający.
