Tyberiusz

From the Latin Tiberius, "of the Tiber river". Fewer than 400 Poles carry it, always men, and it's slipping further out of use: most people here will never meet one.

What Tyberiusz means

Where Tyberiusz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Tyberiusz reaches back to the Latin Tiberius, a Roman name built on the Tiber, the river that runs through Rome. Its plain meaning is "of the Tiber," or in Polish pochodzący znad Tybru. Before it settled on any child, Tiberius marked a person as belonging to that water and the city it fed.

The best-known bearer was the emperor Tiberius, stepson of Augustus, who ruled Rome from 14 to 37 AD. Roman historians remembered him as a grim figure who withdrew to the island of Capri in his final years. Through him the name entered the chronicles, and much later reached Polish as Tyberiusz. Polish added its own -usz ending, the same one it gives to Juliusz and Klaudiusz.

Today the name is rare in Poland. A boy called Tyberiusz stands out on a school register, his name longer than the Kacpers and Jakubs around him. The origin stays legible. Whoever carries it holds a small piece of Roman geography, the Tiber running under a Latin word that means, simply, of the river.
