What Tsimur means

Where Tsimur comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Tsimur begins in temür, the Turkic word for iron. It is the Belarusian and Eastern form of Timur, the same name carried by the fourteenth-century ruler of Samarkand whom the West calls Tamerlane. The short meaning holds close to that root: iron, or żelazo in Polish.

Iron is a plain thing to name a child after. It does not shine. You have to heat it before it will give, and it keeps an edge once you set one.

On a Polish class register, Tsimur reads as a visitor from further east, a spelling a teacher slows down to pronounce.

The historical Timur left the name attached to hardness rather than to any single virtue, and the meaning survived the man. Whatever else shifted across languages and borders, one thing stayed fixed: Tsimur still means iron.
