What Philippe means

Where Philippe comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Philippe comes from the Greek Philippos, built from philos, meaning loving, and hippos, the horse. The short meaning that survives is "lover of horses," miłośnik koni in Polish. In ancient Greece a fondness for horses marked rank and money, since only the wealthier families could keep and train them. Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, carried the name into the history books.

The form reached Poland through French. Several French kings wore it over the centuries, and the spelling with that final -ppe still signals its French route rather than the Polish Filip.

Picture a name-day list at a Polish urząd, an imieniny marked for one boy while the register beside it holds three ordinary Filips. The French Philippe sits a little apart, foreign on the page yet easy to say.

The meaning stays close to the surface here. No hidden layer needs unpacking. A horse and someone who loves it, that is the whole of it, kept in the old Greek roots philos and hippos.
