Teodozja

Teodozja comes from Greek, built from theos, god, and dosis, a giving. Put together they mean gift of god, dar boży in Polish. The same two roots stand behind the masculine form Teodozy, and behind the Roman emperor Theodosius I, who made Christianity the religion of the state in the year 380.

In everyday use the full name rarely survives. It shrinks to Tosia, and Tosia is what a child answers to, at nursery and at the playground and long after. The baptismal form waits in the paperwork. It surfaces once on a school register, at the top of the page, and then a teacher says Tosia like everyone else.

So the name lives on two levels. One is short and quick. The other is the older, fuller Teodozja, kept for the urząd and for name-day cards. Both point back to the same Greek roots, and under the light diminutive the old meaning holds steady: gift of god.
