Emma

Emma grew out of the Germanic root ermin, or irmin, which meant whole, universal. Old forms shortened longer names built on that element, and Emma settled as the short, standalone result. The meaning stayed close to the surface: whole and universal, a claim of completeness in two syllables.

One early bearer carried the name into the record. Emma of Normandy became queen of England twice over in the eleventh century, wife to two kings and mother to two more. Centuries later Jane Austen gave the name to a heroine who thinks she knows everything and slowly learns she does not.

In Poland the name arrives without a Slavic cousin or a nickname to soften it. It stands alone. On a school register it reads plainly, four letters a child can copy in a moment. Emma keeps its Germanic root beneath the spelling. Cały, uniwersalny: whole and universal, the meaning it began with.
