Sabina

Sabina comes from Latin, the feminine of Sabinus, and it means a Sabine woman, someone from the Sabines, an old Italic people who lived in the hills northeast of Rome. Roman legend keeps them close to the city's founding through the abduction of the Sabine women, the episode Livy records in his first book, when Rome's early men seized wives from a neighboring tribe. So the name points back to a real people and a story Rome told about itself.

The Sabines were eventually absorbed into Rome, and their name survived as a personal one. Sabina of Rome, a martyr honored on 29 August, gave it a Christian bearer, and that is one reason it settled into calendars across Europe. In Poland the name kept its name-day, and Sabina still appears there among the saints.

Sabina carries no diminutives here, no variants, no cross-gender form. It stands on its own. Read it on a Polish class register and the meaning is plain: a woman of the Sabine people.
