Róża

Róża is a flower before it is a name. In Slavic speech the word named the rose in the garden, and Polish kept the bloom and the woman under one word, so that to hear the name is to hear the plant. The short meaning stays plain: rose, or in Polish kwiat róży.

From that root the longer forms branch off. Rozalia, with its older spelling Rozaliia, stretches the two syllables into something more formal, the name a teacher reads down a class register on the first day of September while Róża stays the everyday face of it.

That September timing is no accident. The imieniny of Rozalia and Róża fall on the fourth, the feast of Saint Rozalia of Palermo, a hermit whom Pope Urban VIII entered into the Roman calendar in the seventeenth century. A rose is easy to picture. The name hands you the flower and little else: kwiat róży.
