Olek

Olek is a Slavic short form, the everyday version of Aleksander that Poles reach for at home and in the schoolyard. The fuller name reads as "defender of men," obrońca ludzi, and Olek takes that meaning along while cutting it down to two brisk syllables. Around it stand other forms of the same root: Aleks, the blunter diminutive, Oleś, the softer one, and the Latvian variant Aleksandrs across the border.

On a class register, Olek and Oleś might belong to the same boy, one name for the teacher and one for his friends. The feminine Aleksandra runs alongside, so a family can hold the name on both sides at once.

The idea of a protector was never a Polish invention. It came with the name from the older Greek Alexandros, built from words for warding off and for a man. Olek keeps none of that on its surface. What it keeps is the job: defender of men.
