Nicholas

Nicholas begins in Greek. The source is Nikolaos, a compound of nikē, victory, and laos, the people, which yields the reading victory of the people. Centuries before English took it up, the name belonged to a fourth-century bishop of Myra whose reputation for gift-giving grew into the figure Poland celebrates as Święty Mikołaj.

The English form came in through the Church and stuck. It threw off a family of short forms: Nick, Nicky, Cole. On a class register the full name sits in one column while a boy answers to Nick in the next row of noise.

Across the border into Polish, the same Greek root turns into Mikołaj, the variant that fills December calendars and name-day lists. The meaning stays legible under both spellings. A Nicholas or a Mikołaj holds, in the plain sense of the Greek, the victory of the people.
