Nelia

Nelia grows out of Cornelia, an old Roman family name that traces back to the Latin word cornu, meaning horn. As a diminutive it shed the full form and kept a brighter sound.

The most celebrated Cornelia was the mother of the Gracchi, a Roman woman remembered for generations as a model of dignity. Nelia takes only the tail of that grand name and leaves the rest behind.

In Poland the name often appears as Nela, its close variant, short enough to write without thinking on a form at the urząd. The literal horn of the Roman original slipped out of view, and a warmer meaning moved in. Polish readers hear Nelia as jasna and promienna, bright and radiant. That sense came later. It grew from the sound of the name rather than from its Latin root.

The horn is still there in the etymology, even when no one thinks of it.
