Markus

Markus descends from the Latin Marcus, among the oldest names carried by Roman citizens. The Romans linked it to Mars, their god of war, so the short meaning reads as dedicated to Mars, warlike. That martial sense sat inside the name from early on, though it said nothing certain about any boy who bore it.

From Latin the name traveled north. German and Scandinavian families adopted Markus and kept the spelling with its hard k, and it became a familiar entry on many a Norwegian or German class register. In Poland the same root gives Marek, the variant most children hear at school.

A boy named Markus shares his name with Mark the Evangelist, whose symbol is the winged lion. Warlike in origin, the name has grown mild in daily use.

Say it at an urząd counter and the clerk writes it without asking twice. The war god is still there in that first hard syllable, but few pause on Mars now. What stays plain is the root: Marcus, and its Polish cousin Marek.
