What Marian means

Where Marian comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Marian comes from Latin, from the adjective Marianus, which meant "of Marius." Marius was a Roman clan name, the gens of Gaius Marius, the general who remade the Republic's army before his death in 86 BC. Marianus marked belonging. A person called Marianus was reckoned among the people of Marius, and the short meaning holds to that root: of Marius, należący do Mariusza.

The name settled in Poland as a man's name, and its family spreads from one Latin stem. The older spelling Maryan turns up in nineteenth-century records. The feminine Marianna grew from the same source, and today it keeps its own place on official forms and in the name-day calendar. Marian and Marianna share an origin without sharing a life.

Picture a class register at a Polish school. One Marian sits among the boys, his name older than the Republic that first spoke it. The root stays plain: Marianus, of Marius.
