Maksym
From the Greek Maximos, "greatest": a large word to hand a small boy. It rings familiar today, sitting near 186th, though after a spike a few years back it's given a little less each year.
Maksym Pronunciation
Maksym is pronounced MAHK-sihm (/ˈmaksɨm/).
What Maksym means
Where Maksym comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Maksym reaches Polish through the Greek Maximos, a name that means greatest. The same root gives the short Polish sense, największy. Greek speakers carried the name across the early Christian world, and one bearer fixed it there: Maximos the Confessor, a monk and theologian of the seventh century whose writings the Church still reads. From that Greek form the Polish Maksym settled into use.
The name travels light. Its diminutive, Maks, does the everyday work, on a friend's lips or in a class register. The variant Maxim runs east and west of Poland, the same greatest under a different spelling.
Say the full form and you get the whole claim: greatest. It is a large word to hand a small person. A boy named Maksym grows into it slowly, the way a child grows into a coat bought a size too big. On the day of his imieniny the name stands plain on the card, Maksym, greatest, Greek at the root.
When Maksym celebrates name day
Maksym appears 24 times in the Polish name day calendar, never as a main name. The first of these dates is 8 January.
Rarer dates. Only the most complete calendars add this name on these days. Most skip them, so hardly anyone celebrates then.
