Eligiusz

The name Eligiusz comes from the Latin Eligius, built on the verb eligere, meaning to choose or to single out. That root sets the English "chosen one" and the Polish "wybraniec" unusually close to the literal source, since here the sense was not fastened onto the name long after the fact. The gloss and the grammar agree.

The best-documented bearer is Saint Eligius of Noyon, a goldsmith of the seventh century who became a bishop and, in time, a patron of metalworkers and farriers. His name day falls on the first of December, and in older Polish calendars that date still carries his figure. A boy answering to Eligiusz at roll call in a school register meets a name that most of his classmates have never heard worn.

In Poland the form has stayed rare. It comes without diminutives in common use and without a familiar short version, so it tends to stand at full length wherever it appears. The sense underneath stays plain: eligere, to choose, and the one who bears it is the one picked out.
