What Louis means
Where Louis comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Louis begins in Germanic speech, in the old name Hludwig. It joins two words, "hlud" for famous and "wig" for war, and the meaning that survives is famous warrior. Frankish rulers carried an early version, Chlodovech, before French smoothed the sounds into Louis.
In France the name became something close to royal property. Eighteen kings answered to Louis, from the medieval court to the last before the revolution. That lineage is why it reads as French today, though its bones stay Germanic. Beyond the throne, Louis Pasteur carried it into science in the nineteenth century.
Louis IX became a saint.
His feast set a name-day on the 25th of August. On an official form at the urząd, Louis fills the space for a first name, its meaning intact: famous warrior.
