What Levani means

Where Levani comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Levani is a Georgian name, at home in the Caucasus, where fathers have passed it to sons for many generations. It grows from Levan, and behind Levan stands the old lion-word that also produced the Greek Leon and the Slavic Lew. The plain meaning holds across all of them: lion, or in Polish, lew.

History records a real one. Levan of Kakheti sat on the throne of a kingdom in eastern Georgia from 1518 until his death in 1574, a long reign remembered as one of the most peaceful the realm ever had. A lion's name suited the seat he held.

In a Polish class register, Levani would stand out among the Kacpers and Szymons, a Georgian guest on a Polish list. Anyone who knows that lew means lion can still read what the name is saying. That is what Levani says. Lion.
