Lorena

Lorena grows from the Latin word laurus, the laurel. In Rome the laurel wreath sat on the heads of victors and poets, so a laureate was someone marked out for winning. The English word laureate, as in poet laureate, comes from that same laurel. That old image gives Lorena its meaning: crowned with laurel, and behind it, victorious.

The name settled most warmly in Spain and Italy, where it shares a family with Laura, another daughter of the same laurel. Spanish and Italian ears hear it as soft and complete. It needs no diminutive to lean on.

A Polish child called Lorena stands a little apart on a school register, her name Latin at the root yet Mediterranean in feeling. No shortened form trails after it, since Lorena arrives without variants.
